Welcome to the Burke Centre Swim Club

The Burke Centre Swim Club (BCSC) is comprised of two teams; the Burke Centre Penguins and the Burke Centre Stingers. Each team has approximately 225 swimmers. Neither team has a dive team. Both teams are considered equal (there is no "A" or "B" team). The Penguins & the Stingers exist under a single charter, but they operate completely independently with individual team presidents and boards. The Burke Centre Conservancy maintains five pools throughout the Burke community. The home pool for the Penguins is the Landings Pool. The home pool for the Stingers is the Ponds Pool. Visit both teams’ websites (links at right) to learn more. When you register to swim, you request a particular team. Once swimmers are assigned to a team, they remain on that team. Every effort is made to honor requests, but understand that the club attempts to balance the total swimmers, age-groups, and abilities of both teams. For this reason, it may be necessary, on occasion, to move a swimmer to a particular team. To keep the teams balanced, changing teams, after you have been assigned,
is not permitted.

The Burke Centre Swim Club participates in the Colonial Swimming League (CSL) Colonial Swim League website

COVID-19 UPDATE (Updated 3/31/2020)
With the stay at home order from Governor Northam going through June 10th, there is no chance for a "normal" swim season.  For this reason, the Burke Centre Swim Club has suspended taking new registrations for the 2020 season. This is NOT a full cancelation of our season, bur rather an acknowledgement that the season will not happen as originally planned. We are still waiting for a decision by both the Colonial Swim League on the season itself and by the Burke Centre Conservancy on status of the pools on which we rely.

If you were a returning member to the team and have already registered, your registration will be refund with the exception of the credit card fee.

We are hoping that there may still be a way for both swim teams to have some form of shortened season. To gauge the level of interest in this, a short survey has been created.  Even if you are new to the teams we would appreciate your input to the survey.

*** Please read information related to the registration process for 2019 below prior to registering. ***

**NOTE FOR NEW SWIMMERS: On April 1 you will be directed to the Penguins registration site for registration. However, during the registration process you will be prompted to provide information regarding your desired team (Stingers or Penguins). We will attempt to accommodate your request as best as possible, but due to the number of registrants for each team, we may not be able to meet all requests.

***Registration process for the Burke Centre Swim Club for 2020 summer season***

Registration for the Burke Centre Swim Club (both Penguins and Stingers) is done online. Plan to register EARLY! To maintain safe swimming conditions, both Penguin and Stinger swim teams will be capped this year. In addition, specific age-groups may be closed if numbers within the group become unmanageable. Online registration for returning team members begins on March 15, 2020. Online registration for NEW swimmers begins on April 1, 2020. The cost for Early Bird registration (register by April 30, 2020) is $160 per swimmer for the first two swimmers, $130 for the third swimmer, and no charge for any additional swimmers (max early bird family cost of $450). Registrations completed after May 15, 2020, will automatically be charged an additional $30 (per family) over the early bird fee. Once registration is closed either due to reaching capacity or by June 7, 2020, a wait list will be started. Preference on the wait list will be given to Burke Centre residents and returning swimmer families.

NOTE: If a swimmer has swum competitively in the past, they will be asked to provide their best times as part of the online registration. Please have that information available before beginning the online registration process. Be reminded that swimmers must also be members of the Burke Centre pools to participate on the swim team. Go to Burke Centre Pool Membership Applications, Pool Locations, & Pool Rules for pool membership information.

ALL swimmers new to the BCSC (age 10 and younger), including any siblings that have not participated before, must attend the new swimmer Evaluation Day on Tuesday, May 26, 2020.  New Penguin swimmers will be evaluated at the Landings Pool (from 4:00 to 6:30 pm); new Stinger swimmers will be evaluated at the Commons Pool (from 5:00 to 7:30 pm); swimmers may come anytime during that window. All swimmers MUST have a Burke Centre Pool Pass to access the pool at all times. To participate on the swim team, the BCSC requires that swimmers meet certain performance criteria which essentially requires swimmers to swim 15 yards (front and back) and float and tread water for ~30 seconds. Swimmers do not need to know competitive strokes. New swimmers who register after the evaluation day will be assigned to a team and evaluated at the first team practice attended. Team rosters are due to the CSL by the second dual meet in the season. Swimmers that do not pass the evaluation may practice (independently) and retest up until that date.

Families who have not participated on either team will be assigned to either the Penguins or Stingers team at the draft meeting held in mid-May. As explained above, efforts will be made to honor requests, but preferences are NOT guaranteed. After the draft, families will be notified of their team assignment prior to each team’s parent meetings toward the end of May. Applicants who register after the draft will be assigned to a team based on team preference and/or team availability. New swimmers that register after the evaluation day, will be assigned to a team and will be evaluated at the first team practice attended.

Refund policy: Team rosters are due to the CSL by the second dual meet in the season (June 22 this season). Swimmers who do not pass the evaluation may practice (independently) and retest up until that date. Arrange for retests with your team’s head coach. Swimmers who do not pass and choose not to retest OR retest but do not pass, will receive a full refund. Swimmers may withdraw from the team (for a refund) through Sunday, June 14, 2020. Requests (for both Penguin and Stinger teams) must be in writing (email is fine) to the BCSC President ~ If a swimmer withdraws from the team (prior to that date) for a reason not related to the swimmer evaluation, they will be refunded the registration fee minus a $10 non-refundable processing fee. No refunds are issued if a swimmer chooses to withdraw after that date.

New parents are encouraged to attend their team parent meeting prior to the start of the summer season. Important practice time and meet schedules will be distributed; and coaches will be there to discuss their plans for the season and answer any questions you may have. Both Penguin and Stinger parent meetings will be held on nights/locations indicated below:
  • The Penguin parent meeting will be on:
    •   Thursday, May 21, 2020 at 7:00 pm at the Landings Community Center.
  • The Stinger parent meeting will be on:
    •   Wednesday, June 3, 2020 During each practice at the Commons Community Center.

Summary:  For the 2020 season, the BCSC has a volunteer requirement. All BCSC families must work 8 jobs (5 must be meet related) during the swim season for their respective team. Families have the choice to opt-out. There are two options from which to choose in order to fulfill volunteer requirements:
1.  During the online registration process, your family can opt-out of the requirement and pay the $225 as part of your registration fee. The teams need volunteers and prefer families to not opt out if at all possible. We understand that that each situation is different and other commitments may prevent a family from being able to volunteer (deployments, vacations mid-season, etc).  If you are new to the teams, the 8 "jobs" is very obtainable and often families volunteer more than required!
2.  If you family wishes to fulfill the volunteer requirement, you must submit a check for $225, payable to the Burke Centre Swim Club, to the team volunteer coordinator during the first week of practice. The check will be voided and returned to families who fulfill the volunteer requirement. The list of volunteer jobs from which to choose will be posted and managed on each team's website closer to the beginning of the season. An e-mail will go out to families to announce the opening of volunteer signups. Volunteer jobs start during the first weeks of practice and continue through the swim meets, social events, and team banquets,
with final options available at the Burke Centre Festival in September.
